Now that we have our idea and our script, we’re on to the fun bit, filming.
By the end of this filming module, you will be able to:
The filming process can be very exhilarating because when you capture a great shot, and think, “yeah that was good”, it gives you a sense of satisfaction and anticipation for the final edit. This excitement fuels your creativity and motivation into the editing process as you look forward to seeing how the footage will come together to create the finished video. That’s the kind of energy where you’re editing late into the night, because you just can’t stop - that’s a great place to be!
I often actually dread the filming part right up until the moment I hit record. Many people experience a sense of anxiety or self-doubt before filming, and this is completely normal. Before I hit record, I’m overthinking every detail, “what am I going to say? Is the lighting ok? Does my hair look wild?” - In my older videos there’d often be some sort of “pre-filming footage” at the start of my videos because I’ve just hit record so I can get on with it. And then I’d do some sort of pre-filming routine or intro to help ease yourself into the process and get in the right mindset. I actually often do some stretches, or punching in the air, and run around a little bit, just to get that energy level higher for filming. You might not have that same anxiety, but it’s just something I experience sometimes, and I would say, it gets much better with practice, and repetition.
Working with cameras is great fun, it’s your opportunity to be creative and express yourself. And remember, when you’re filming, you’re in control of the footage.. you can mess up, film something embarrassing, and just not use it. Can you imagine how much embarrassing stuff I film, and not use! You are in control!
Our first lesson in this module is about which camera to use and when, so let’s jump into it.
