In this lesson, we’re going to explore what it means to create content from your perspective.
Your perspective is unique, and no one else in the entire world can have the exact same perspective as you. And sharing your perspective can help you connect with your audience and stand out from others. It could be your job, where you live, your surroundings, or your family life. Maybe there’s an element of your life there that is interesting to other people. In a nutshell, it’s the perspective you have on the world.
Some of you may be thinking, “I dunno, I’m pretty average, nothing going on here”. Something to remember is that it might seem average to you because you live it every single day, but to other people, it’s completely foreign. Why do you think so many “casual workdays” videos have been so popular? You know the ones like, “so today I woke up, had some breakfast, then I climbed this 500ft crane,” because it’s genuinely interesting to other people that aren’t living your life. That guy climbs a crane every day, and it probably gets a little repetitive. I hate heights and never want to climb anything. It’s two very different perspectives, which is precisely what makes it interesting to everyone else.
Now you’re probably thinking, “yeah, but I don’t climb cranes for a living”. That’s cool, it’s just an example. Another one would be a video from a girls perspective where her dad turned into this dinosaur character. That was her perspective of her dad, that she wanted to share with the world. If you imagine the same video being shared from the dads perspective, then all of a sudden, it’s maybe a bit cringey. This is something you should think about. What things do you have within your perspective that could be utilised to create a story that you’re passionate about telling?
For me, I think it’s my video work that I produce for a living and how I get by doing that - including my studio here that I share with Dave, and my obsession with video content and the world of YouTube. That’s the interesting perspective that I have, that I think is interesting to my audience.
A unique perspective could come in the form of commentary. Maybe you just want to talk about a particular subject you’re passionate about. That’s cool too - that is a unique perspective, as long as it’s coming directly from you and your way of thinking. Remember, seven odd billion people in this world, and nobody has the same exact same perspective as you, so create content like it.
Your task for this lesson is to come up with 3-5 things that you see from your unique perspective. What’s around you that interests you? What parts of your life are unique? How do you see things differently?
Take some time, and write some thoughts down about your perspective. Once you’ve done that, you can mark this lesson as complete and move on to the next lesson, which is, Your Character.
